Kentucky Grand Hotel & Spa Installs SmartWaterValve
“In the nearly two years since the SmartWaterValve were installed in the towers our water billing has been reduced an average of 23.6%. I am happy to report that the water pressure has shown no noticeable change.”
Bob Pack, General Manager – Grand Central at Kennedy
How can hotels reduce their utility bills?
Are there improved water conservation and management solutions available today?
One of the largest annual expense line items for any hotel’s budget (large or small) is utility cost. According to an article written by PKF Hospitality Research (a CBRE Company), Water and Sewer costs are the 2nd largest utility expense for hotels topping off at almost 25% of all utility costs.
It has been estimated that on average a hotel guest will consume between 100 to 200 gallons per day. This averages out to about 36,500 to 73,000 gallons of water per occupied room per year. Thus, as former hotel General Manager Pete Peterson notes:
“The water expense per hotel is a significant cost that needs controlling.”
— Pete Peterson, Former Hotel General Manager
Most hotel operators and owners have been able to lower operating expenses on heat, light, and power with new controls, better staff training, and improved power negotiations. However, the remaining utility expense that has been virtually untouched is water and sewer. New intelligent water technology is needed to help operators and owners of hospitality assets.
In the past, controlling the water usage and water expenses for individual properties came down to either replacing old fixtures with newer products that reduced water flow or reducing the perk of daily linen cleaning in the guest room. The end result was less water coming out of a shower or faucet or forcing the guest to “go green” ultimately delivering a poor guest experience. With the annual increase in water rates (3% to 5%) passed down from all water municipalities, hotels have been forced to raise room rates just to stay even with the rising costs.

The SmartWaterValve ™ helps control this problem at the source. With the installation of the valve downstream of the city meter, air delivered with the water remains entrained until it passes through The SmartWaterValve ™ thus preventing the meter from reading the air. The end result is a better guest experience and savings on the Hotel’s water bill. Savings vary due to the hotel’s pipe configuration; however, the average savings is anywhere from 10% to 20% off each property’s water bill.

Hotel Testimonial
“I am writing to tell you about our success with your wonderful product, the SmartWaterValve. We installed the valve on our main water line at the Doubletree Tarrytown in 2013. The installation was very quick and easy and went without a hitch. Since the valve was installed we have seen consistent savings on our monthly water bill of 10% to 15%. This is phenomenal and has helped improve our bottom line. Other than seeing our water bills drop, you would not even know the valve was there. In addition to the savings, the SmartWaterValve helped us win the 2014 Westchester County Green Business Award for Water Resource Conservation. We are very proud of this as it recognizes the positive results of our ‘green’ operating philosophy. My only lament is that our sewer charges are not connected to our water meter, or we would be saving even more money there! Thank you for making our business better. I would highly recommend the valve to anyone with a water bill and will definitely be spreading the word.”
